SARAH HAD ALEX’S PERMISSION to involve Daniel Carter. All the same, she still couldn’t help staring at her phone, her thumb hovering over the send button. Each time she involved Sergeant Carter, her friend on the local force, it was like stepping onto a thin wire suspended over a dark abyss. Daniel swore his contacts were clean and she had chosen to believe him. But if she fell from this tightrope, there would be no going back. However, they were running out of time, and the enemy was almost ready to play their winning hand.

With a deep breath, she sent the message flying through the digital ether. She watched the screen as the message was delivered, the seconds ticking by like the slow beat of a heart in suspense. She imagined Carter on the other end, his piercing eyes narrowing as he read her words.

The reply came quicker than expected. “Wow. How did you work all that out?”

Sarah’s heart quickened. Daniel was impressed and he knew the implications of their discovery. They had a chance of stopping Prescott in his tracks. She waited, wondering how he would advise her to play it; to bring in more resources from the county force or to continue alone. Alone was her preference. The NCA had abandoned her here to limit her. But Sarah had only ever seen the benefits.

Sarah glanced around at her sleeping companions. Gwen was curled up in a corner, Miles snoring softly nearby. Alex was on watch, his gaze fixed on the entrance as if guarding their makeshift sanctuary. Sarah hesitated, torn between her loyalty to her friends and the need to secure their future.

Her phone buzzed with another message. “You’ve done brilliantly. Have you gone to the NCA with this?”

Sarah narrowed her eyes. “No.” She sent the text and waited.

The reply came through quickly enough. “Smart move. You did the right thing.”

Sarah hoped so. But until they were able to clinch what they needed against Prescott, until they had enough to bring him low, doing the right thing was purely a matter of perspective.
